After evacuating the building the New Glasgow Police, with the assistance of the Department of National Defence Maritime Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team, removed the live ammunition. The shells were later exploded safely in McLellans Brook on Department of Natural Resources land.
Const. Ken MacDonald said the shells were discovered to be from the Second World War. He said the main focus of the procedure was the safety of the people in the area and removing the shells safely.
“It’s not uncommon to find ammunition like this in attics or basements of old buildings, but when they are found by anyone we hope they contact the police so we can follow the proper procedure in removing it safely.”
New Glasgow Police Service continues to investigate.
