[WOLFVILLE, NS] - Wolfville town council has decided not to act on a request from Skyway Drive resident Chris Killacky who wanted to operate a small brewery operation as a home occupation.

Killacky’s property is designated Low Density Residential (LDR) and is zoned R-1. This zone does not permit home occupations and rezoning is not an option as the Municipal Planning Strategy (MPS) prohibits rezoning from R-1 to R-1A, a zone that allows home occupations.

Three town councillors had expressed interest in revisiting the issue back in January, but, at the February meeting, the decision was not to reopen the MPS for a single issue.

Killacky appeared before council Jan. 2 seeking a rezoning to allow for a nano brewery. Planning director Chrystal Fuller pointed out that businesses are completely prohibited in the R1 zone. Any change would require an amendment to the 2008 Municipal Planning Strategy, she said.

Five years ago, the final version of the Municipal Planning Strategy (MPS) and Land Use Bylaw (LUB) was approved 5-1. At that time, 250 people signed a petition calling for the preservation of R1 zoning.
