The new supercentre format will put the store in direct competition with the Atlantic Superstore, with whom it shares the shopping complex on Robert Angus Drive, and Sobeys in the Amherst Centre Mall.

Amherst’s Walmart is set to become a Walmart Supercentre later this year.

[AMHERST, NS] – A little more than 10 years after coming to Amherst, Walmart is set to become a Supercentre.

Employees were told last week of the change that will be made sometime later in 2014. While the physical size of the store is not expected to change, the store will see a full-size supermarket component added including meat and poultry, baked goods, a deli, frozen foods, dairy products, garden produce and seafood.

Walmart in Amherst already has a limited grocery selection.

The opening of a supercentre is expected to put the store in direct competition with the Atlantic Superstore, with whom it shares the shopping complex on Robert Angus Drive, and Sobeys in the Amherst Centre Mall.

Company officials could not be reached for comment, but a press release issued earlier this month said Walmart plans to completed 35 supercentre projects across Canada during the 2014-15 fiscal year.

The projects will represent a combined investment of $500 million in the Canadian economy and include the construction of new stores and the expansion, remodeling and relocation of existing stores.

Investments include $376 million for store projects, $91 million for distribution network projects to grow the company’s fresh food capability and $31 million for e-commerce projects.
