[HALIFAX, NS] - When Diana Manuel meets someone new, they usually give her a hug.

It could be thanks to her wide smile, but it’s likely due to the boxes of cookies she delivers to Haligonians on her bright red bicycle throughout the year.

“I’ve gotten a few hugs. It’s really funny, people I’ve never met, just saying ‘I feel like I should hug you,’” Manuel said Thursday as she took a break from biking around the peninsula during her busy Valentine’s week.

“It’s really sweet.”

Manuel started up Cookie Cravings in 2012 but decided to “take a leap” and begin working full-time for her business last November.

After finishing university, Manuel wanted to find a job she loved and decided to combine her hobbies of bikes, baking and crafts.

“That’s kind of everyone’s goal in life, to enjoy what they do for a living,” Manuel said.

Baking all day is a fun part of the job, Manuel said, but she especially likes making her own packaging with ribbons and stamps and doing deliveries because biking is relaxing and “everyone’s super happy and friendly” when she shows up at their door.

If the roads are clear, Manuel said she can be spotted around town with her cookies in a small black trailer behind her bike, but she’ll still deliver on rainy days by hopping on the bus.

The cookie “menu” on Manuel’s website shows about 15 or 16 types people can choose from, but she’s always open to trying something new if you have a special craving.

Someone asked her to make a date-filled oatmeal cookie and she loved it so much she added it to the menu, Manuel said, but her current favourite is a lemon-shortbread cookie with raspberry buttercream filling.

“Every time I make them, I eat a bunch myself,” Manuel laughed. “Hazards of the job, I eat a lot of cookie dough and baked cookies.”

Manuel said she’s hoping get a storefront within a couple years, and said business has been better than ever this winter.

“There seems to be a lot of cookie lovers in Halifax, so it’s going pretty good,” Manuel said.
