[HALIFAX, NS] — The Nova Centre is a go.

The announcement came down this morning at Neptune Theatre in Halifax from Rank Inc. president and CEO Joe Ramia.

“Our vision for Nova Centre is simple. Regardless of where people come from, either next door, across the province or from the furthest corners of the world, Nova Centre will be a welcoming place for Nova Scotians and visitors to connect,” Ramia said in a release. “It will be a place to work and experience the best of Nova Scotia’s people, innovative thinking, entrepreneurial spirit, local food, entertainment and culture.”

The one-million, square-foot development on Argyle Street is set to include a financial centre, luxury hotel, residences, retail and entertainment amenities, parking, and a convention centre, event plaza and public space.

The convention centre was the only tenant announced for the new site today, which comes after the province and HRM signed a memorandum of agreement to move forward with the project. All three levels of government are helping in the funding of the convention centre.

Eleven public consultation sessions will take place across the province, mostly in Halifax, on ideas of what they want to see in the overall Nova Centre complex.

Excavation work is scheduled to begin by the end of the August, with construction to start in the spring of 2013.

Ramia said the official opening of Nova Centre is slated for the end of 2015.
