[MOUNT WILLIAM, NS] — A local paving company has been recognized for its solid safety record.

Webster Bros. Paving and Concrete Limited was recently awarded The Nova Scotia Construction Safety Association’s safest companies award of excellence.

Nolan Webster, one of the owners of the company, said it was an honour to accept the award on behalf of the company, which he founded in 1997 with his sons Robert, Darren and Todd.

“We’ve been 15 years in the business and never had one claim with the Workers Compensation Board,” said Nolan. “We’ve got the best rating in the asphalt industry with the lowest rating you can have with workers compensation.”

The Nova Scotia Construction Safety Association hands out its awards based on a comparison of the employer’s total assessments paid to the Workers Compensation versus the actual costs of accidents and injuries.

Nolan said good management and a strong safety practice has contributed to the company’s record. Having 118 years of combined service in the asphalt business with his sons also helped them run a company that respects the type of work that needs to be done.

“There is no room for horseplay here,” Nolan said. “You can’t fool around in this type of work. We keep striving for excellence because we want to be revered as a safe company.”

Webster Bros. Paving currently employs 14 people working in various designs of hot and warm mix asphalt and its sales are focused mainly in Pictou County and surrounding areas. It has done work for each of the five towns as well a commercial sites such as Wal-Mart and has been recently awarded the tender for a grade of paving at the site of the Pictou County Wellness Centre.
