[DARTMOUTH, NS] – One local paper and printing company is modernizing with the help of government investment.

Maritime Paper Products Ltd. received a $2.1 million term loan from Nova Scotia Business Inc. as well as a payroll rebate of more than $200,000 to ensure the company maintains its 118 full-time production employees.

The money will be put toward new printing presses in a continuing effort to bring the plant up to speed.

"After introducing a new printing press, which replaced two older models, we've seen improvements to product quality and to the efficiency of our overall production," said Steve MacDonald, vice president, finance at Maritime Paper.  "This investment will allow our company to continue delivering a superior product to our clients around the world."

The company started its modernization back in 2004 and is able to continue today because of the investment.

Lund, MacDonald and Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter made the funding announcement this morning in Dartmouth.

Yes, but did anyone think that maybe if they lowered the extraordinary wage paid to a person for standing over the press, making sure it was functioning, then maybe they wouldn't need a loan?!! I know of one person who makes $22/ hour to do just that at that facility! Meanwhile, there are people out busting their a$$es for similar money at other companies who are getting laid off!!!
