With an enduring mission to inspire audiences with great stories, Neptune Theatre in Halifax is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
Neptune is Atlantic Canada’s largest professional regional theatre. Its season runs from September until June with productions like CATS and The Wizard of Oz.
Each year, the playbill includes a broad range of theatrical experiences, from musicals to world and Canadian premieres, to dramas and popular comedies. In Fountain Hall, which seats almost 500 people, six world-class productions are staged. These include lavish musicals such as A Christmas Carol: The Musical, comedies like The Game of Love and Chance by Marivaux, and dramas such as David Lindsay-Abaire’s Rabbit Hole. In the Studio Theatre, smaller more innovative productions are featured in an intimate setting. For example, this season Neptune presents The (Post) Mistress by Tomson Highway and Eighteen by Michael Melski.
Neptune Theatre is also home to a year-round Theatre School, which runs classes, camps and workshops for people of all ages. The Theatre School also offers several elite training programs: the Youth Performance Company, the Pre-Professional Training program and the Musical Theatre Foundation Program which give aspiring local actors an opportunity to work with and learn from the region’s top artistic talent. The theatre has a touring company as well. The Young Neptune Company Tour, which has traveled to schools across Nova Scotia since 1979, presents plays to expose youth to live theatre, while at the same time educate them about topical issues. Close to 450,000 students have seen one of these performances over the years.
Neptune Theatre is an enduring cultural organization that continues to enrich the community throughout Atlantic Canada and earn a national reputation through artistic and creative excellence in its programming and the practice of its craft.
As it evolves with the changing times, Neptune looks forward to what the next 50 years hold.
